There are various news reports surfacing about the disappearance on his sailboat of Turing Award winner and Microsoft researcher, Jim Gray. I am not a personal friend of Jim's... I wish I were. I have had the pleasure of his company on only a single occasion, a meeting last year on institutional repositories. This giant of our field was modest, unpreposessing, funny, and friendly... we kidded one another with and about our cameras. He was also quietly incisive, seeing easily to the core of the questions swirling around the table and among the egos.
He is a great friend of libraries and our collective digital future. I join his many colleagues, friends, and family in hopes of his safe return.
